Pope John Paul II yesterday highlighted the importance of conscience in the quest to be close to God, insisting that work for social justice accompany acts of prayer and worship.

Addressing around 4500 people at his regular Wednesday audience, he spoke of the “purity of conscience” that is distinct from the “ritual purity” required by some faiths.

“To achieve this we need to listen to the spirit of the Prophets, heard throughout the Psalm, reminding us that there can be no separation of faith from daily life, or of prayer from work, or adoration from social justice,” he said. “Correct morality concerns all aspects of our life
